Common Misconceptions about donating blood

 I can’t donate because I am diabetic.

Yes, you can as long as you are stable and have eaten before donating blood.

I can’t donate because I am on medication.

Most medications are all right.  You can call the our medical line at

1-800-688-0900 or ask the person in charge at the blood drive

I tried to donate once, but they told me I was anemic.

Your iron level changes on a daily basis.  It is checked before you donate blood. 

I went on vacation to Europe for two weeks.

Mad cow restrictions apply only if you spent extensive time (months) in European countries.

I had a heart attack or stroke.

In certain cases you can donate.  Call 1-800-688-0900 for information.

I had cancer.

If it has been 2 years since the end of treatment, you can donate.  There are a few exceptions.  (If you were deferred for cancer in the past, you must call 1-800-688-0900 a few days before donating to get the restriction lifted.)

I just finished taking antibiotics.

You can donate as long as you have had your last dose and are feeling well

(even the day of the blood drive).

I have high blood pressure.

Your blood pressure is checked before donating.  High blood pressure medication is fine.
